| So I was playing Red Dead Redemption at my buddy's place, having a pretty good time accomplishing accomplishables, and I find myself in a horse race.
Now the horseback riding is cool in Red Dead but I wouldn't really call it fun. Unlike driving a car in GTA, top speed is reached pretty easily and the only way you can really fuck up is by exhausting your horse. Still, they're well done for being horses.
Anyway, this race starts and I feel like I've played it a million times before. You start out in the back of the pack (of course) and in about 10 seconds you're in the lead (of course). No sweat. I'm maintaining the same speed and dutifully tapping the X button for a while, a quick look at the mini-map and I see every other racer is bunched up maybe 3 seconds behind.
It's a ridiculously common practice in racing games to prevent your opponents from falling too far behind you, keeps it from getting too boring. I find it annoying when it's obvious, but I'm used to it.
The race is going on way longer than it needs to (seems like a theme in RDR.) Nothing is happening. I'm going the same speed and pack is following close behind. Then SHOCKER two horseys break away from the pack and pass me easily, and OH NO the finish line is almost in sight!
I didn't feel excited, I felt cheated. I knew that all I needed was to keep doing exactly what I'd been doing the whole race and I'd pass them just in time to win. And that's what happened. And it wasn't satisfying at all. The end.
There are about a million examples of this in gaming, especially modern console games. It's just a lazy cheap way of making your game appear more fun and challenging than it actually is. You can sense a little helping hand in a lot of newer games, but when it's blatant it can just kill the gameplay. "Oh I thought that was me being awesome, not the developers trying to make me feel good about myself."
tl;dr Rigged gameplay mechanics in a race in Red Dead Redemption made me very sad
